Neurodiversity-Affirming

I take a neurodiversity and life-course perspective to therapy. Because all human minds and sets of experiences are one-of-a-kind, every person is neurodivergent.

Our society places a high value on “being normal.” Many people respond by forcing themselves to fit expectations that do not meet their needs. This increases anxiety and depression and decreases wellbeing, physical health, and the ability to live life according to one’s values and goals.

Some neurodivergent conditions, such as ADHD, autism, and LGBTQIA+, are uncommon but natural ways of being- present from birth and needing an accepting and nurturing environment to flourish.

Internal Conflicts

People often have internal conflicts and can benefit from working through these conflicts. This starts with genuinely unmasking yourself to yourself- getting to know your most authentic parts of you. As part of this process, you will discover that different parts have different needs. This is the source of internal conflict.

People also experience external conflicts. These can be with other people (parents, romantic partners, children, coworkers, employers, and more) or systems (schools, workforce, healthcare, societal attitudes, and more). The ability to navigate external conflicts relies on the ability to navigate internal conflicts. I support people in making connections between the internal work and their external experiences. My goal is to help you achieve greater self-empowerment to create the life you want.

Trauma is a Neurotype

Some neurodivergent conditions can be due to trauma. These trauma responses include fear, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder and other personality disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and more.

There are many ways a person can experience trauma. As children, people can experience conflicts and events that make them feel unsafe emotionally, psychologically, or physically. But, conflicts and events can occur at any point during a person’s life.

Conflicts may involve family, community, school, or work relationships. Conflicts that are experienced as traumatic can create lasting complex emotions and behaviors. And, some events, including accidents and disasters, can create lasting fear responses that can enter interpersonal interactions.

The experience of trauma alters the brain and body. It changes how one views one’s self, other people, and even the world around them. And, it changes how one responds to stress and the experience of emotions such as joy, sadness, anger, and fear. I help people reclaim their access to feeling safe, form new relationships with emotions, and explore and form new responses to stress.
